“We’re not asking for nuclear weapons to be given to us,” Zelensky advised journalists, just a few days after suggesting Kyiv would search both NATO membership or nuclear arms.

Ukraine inherited the world’s third-largest nuclear arsenal when the Soviet Union broke up in 1991. It surrendered the weapons three years later after receiving safety ensures from Russia and the US.

The safety ensures, often known as the Budapest Memorandum, required that the signatories respect Ukraine and the opposite ex-Soviet republics’ territorial integrity and independence.

“We gave away nuclear weapons. We didn’t get NATO,” Zelensky mentioned within the feedback to journalists late Monday that have been launched below embargo. “All we obtained was a full-scale struggle and plenty of victims, so at present we’ve got just one means out.”

“We want NATO, as a result of we do not have the weapons that may cease Putin,” he added.

He was clarifying feedback made at a EU summit final week when he mentioned “both Ukraine can have nuclear weapons, which can shield us, or we should have some form of alliance.”

The remarks triggered anger in Moscow.

“This can be a harmful provocation,” Russia’s Vladimir Putin mentioned advised journalists forward of the BRICS summit in Kazan. “Any step on this route can be met with a corresponding response,” he warned.
