Opposition MPs Boycott Parliamentary Committee Meet On Waqf Invoice

New Delhi:

The Opposition MPs have boycotted the Joint Parliamentary assembly to debate the Waqf modification invoice and wrote to the Speaker demanding that the Committee chairman Jagdambika Pal be eliminated. Alleging that the Committee is biased, they’ve sought time from the Speaker to debate the difficulty.

The Opposition members have alleged {that a} presentation on the invoice by Anwar Manippadi, former Chairman of Karnataka State Minorities Fee and Karnataka Minorities Improvement Company, was not concerning the Invoice. Mr Anwar, they alleged, was simply utilizing the event malign the Karnataka authorities and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

“We now have boycotted as a result of the committee is just not functioning with the ideas and norms of the committee. When it comes to ethics and precept, they’re mistaken,” stated Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant.

Apart from Mr Sawant, Congress’s Gaurav Gogoi and Imran Masood, AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi, Samajwadi Social gathering’s Mohibbullah, DMK’s A Raja and Aam Aadmi Social gathering’s Sanjay Singh, had been seen storming out of the assembly. The meet headed by Mr Pal continued because the Opposition MPs met to debate their subsequent transfer.

The Waqf (Modification) Invoice was launched within the Lok Sabha on August 8 and amid large objections from the Opposition, was referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee. The committee — which has to submit its report back to the Lok Sabha by the tip of the primary week of the subsequent parliament session — is now holding a collection of casual discussions with numerous stakeholders.

The Waqf (Modification) Invoice, 2024, seeks to carry sweeping reforms, introducing digitisation, stricter audits, transparency, and authorized mechanisms to reclaim illegally occupied Waqf properties. The present regulation, courting again to 1995, is seen to have many loopholes that enable corruption and mismanagement of Waqf properties.

The proposed modification has two key components — for the primary time, provision for inclusion of girls in Waqf boards; and guaranteeing that the land is verified earlier than it’s introduced as Waqf property.
