Guwahati:
In a major crackdown, Assam cops in Mangaldoi have rescued 19 canines and arrested 4 people concerned in an unlawful canine smuggling operation.
The arrested individuals- Milik Marak, Ina Sangma, Star Marak from Karbi Anglong, and Malu Sangma from Bhakatpara in Darrang district- are believed to have been a part of an organized community capturing stray and pet canines for unlawful sale.
Performing on a tip-off, the police launched an operation and found the canines confined in sacks inside a locked room.
The 4 suspects reportedly admitted to their brutal strategies, which included trapping canines, feeding them minimally, and transporting them in sacks to consumers.
Sources advised EDNBOX that there’s a excessive demand for canine meat in Nagaland, and the smugglers allegedly meant to promote the road canines.
“We believed that the smugglers meant to move the canines to Nagaland on the market,” a police official mentioned. A case has been filed and the accused have been despatched to judicial custody. In the meantime, six further suspects stay at giant.
Following the rescue, an area volunteer group arrived at Panbari police station to help with the canines’ care.
Though the group lacks a proper shelter, they coordinated with varied NGOs, together with ‘We Animal’ in Tezpur, ‘Generosity Assam’ in Nalbari, and different organisations in Guwahati to rearrange rapid remedy and rehabilitation for the animals.
